James Hardie Siding vs. LP Smart Siding

Straight out of the gate, I’m going to share my personal opinion. After that, I’ll explain the differences between James Hardie Siding and LP Smart Siding. In my view, James Hardie is almost always the better choice for homeowners! I know this is controversial, but it’s an opinion formed from many years in the siding industry. Many companies prefer to keep their real thoughts to themselves, keeping their options open by not commiting.  I, on the other hand, want you to know what I have chosen for my own house.  I could have chosen either one of these products.  In the end it was an easy decision knowing what I know.

Aesthetics & Design

James Hardie Siding vs. LP Smart Siding

Both of these products are incredibly attractive, and when it comes to aesthetics, neither one clearly outshines the other. The engineers behind these systems have done an exceptional job crafting designs that not only protect your home but also enhance its curb appeal. Whether you opt for one product or the other, you’re investing in a system that adds elegance, and sophistication to your property.

Durability & Maintenance

James Hardie Siding

Known for its strength and longevity, James Hardie siding is engineered to last 40 to 50 years with minimal maintenance. Its fiber cement composition resists rot, pests, and fire—making it an excellent choice for areas with harsh weather conditions.

LP Smart Siding

LP Smart Siding does offer an impressive impact resistance durable and flexible structure. But It has a shorter lifespan—typically around 20 to 30 years—it provides a natural wood look with easier installation. The product knowledge curve is less on LP.  However, it will require more regular maintenance (such as repainting) compared to fiber cement products.  It will also likely become more susceptible to birds, and pests.  It does not have the same fire resistance that James Hardie Siding has.

Cost & Warranty Considerations

James Hardie Siding

Most people think that James Hardie products tend to have a higher upfront cost due to their premium materials and longer lifespan, but when we price it out it is very similar. The investment is additionally offset by lower maintenance costs and a robust 30-year non-prorated warranty that adds long-term peace of mind.

LP Smart Siding

LP Smart Siding material costs are often slightly higher than James Hardie but the labor is quite a bit less.  LP is easier to install. It comes with a 50-year limited warranty—though it is prorated after the initial five years.

While I do lean into James Hardie Siding the decision ultimately depends on your priorities:

  • Choose James Hardie Siding if you want maximum durability, superior fire resistance.

  • Choose LP Smart Siding if you’re seeking a natural wood look, easier installation, even if it might require more frequent maintenance (I would recommend this if you are a DIY person).
